Shiatsu
is a Japanese massage technique. In earlier days it was
mainly used within families. During the years it introduced
around the world, developed, incorporated with modern anatomy
and physical therapy, into a professional therapy.
The
term Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure” and as such
only just begins to describe the work of the Shiatsu practitioner.
In reality, various parts of the giver’s body (fingers,
thumbs, palms, forearms, even feet and knees) are used to
apply pressure to the receiver’s body. This can be targeted
at general areas or specific points.
Shiatsu,
like acupuncture is based on the concept of energy patterns,
called “meridians” that run through our bodies from head
to toe. These meridians channel energy to our main body
organs. Not surprisingly, it is sometimes referred to as
“acupuncture without needles.”
These
techniques are used in conjunction with stretches, joint
rotations and joint manipulation to give an ‘all-over’ treatment
which aims at treating the receiver on a holistic level
– working with the body, mind and spirit together. Contacting
the receiver’s chi or internal energy is an integral part
of the treatment.
The
treatment brings about a sense of relaxation while stimulating
the blood and lymphatic flow. The benefits of this treatment
may include pain relief and strengthening of the body’s
resistance to disease and other disorders.
Shiatsu
does not use oils or lotions. The sessions are fully clothed,
and clients should wear loose comfortable clothing.
This
kind of massage is a gentle yet powerful form of bodywork
that promotes the health and the balanced well-being of
the body, mind, and spirit.
